Lehrbuch: Eigenes Material Proficiency in Academic English is a skill required not only for study exchanges to universities in English speaking countries but also for successful participation in international conferences and for the publication in Academic print. The course will, therefore, primarily focus on Academic writing (including sentence, paragraph and essay structure; punctuation; coherence and cohesion) and speaking based on Academic-related settings (including seminar participation and discussions; presentations). In this context, the course, furthermore, aims at expanding the general Academic vocabulary of its participants. It does not, however, focus on a particular academic discipline. We will, consequently, neither deal with subject specific terminology nor with individual citation styles since these vary among Academic disciplines. The two main areas of Academic writing and speaking will be supplemented by exercises in listening and reading. For this purpose, materials related to an Academic context and from the IELTS preparation (Academic Module) will be used. The course is designed for students who are non-native English speakers. It is open to anyone with an upper-intermediate (B2) to advanced (C1) level of English proficiency. |

Short recordings of talks about topics ranging from local to global will spark off conversation, offering participants a chance to report and reflect on personal experiences too. Given topics will alternate with free conversation. Small-group discussions, role plays as well as communication games will strengthen the participants’ fluency in the language. Do you sometimes need to give presentations but you are not sure about the “Do’s and Don’t's”? Both students and professional people at B2 level and above are invited to brush up on their English in a conversational way plus learn how to give an effective presentation. Each class consists of two parts: In the conversation part we will discuss everyday issues of general interest, based on some internet research. The presentation part will take you systematically through the key communication and language skills needed to make clear, well-organized presentations. Focus will be on essential skills from starting and concluding, to using visual aids and handling questions. The highlight of the course will be a short presentation about one of the conversation issues or a subject of your choice. With your agreement, an analysis of your speeches will be done in class on the basis of video recordings. Be prepared to pay a maximum of 7 Euro for copied course material.
